english text THE INCUBATOR The workshop was aimed at
developing solutions for the reuse of the modern heritage buildings, focusing
on the example of the Idroscalo of Pavia. The City Through discussion it was
identified that Pavia has a strong student infrastructure and a deep
knowledge base. However it was apparent that there was a gap in the system
between education and industry that forced students to migrate towards the larger
cities of Northern Italy. With little industry remaining in Pavia it was
believed that through creativity and innovation, economic growth and a more
sustainable Pavia can be achieved. A concept of converting the old seaplane
hangar into an incubator of ideas was developed in order to improve the
connection between education and industry. The Incubator will be a
collaboration between the municipality and the University of Pavia, using the
ideas and knowledge of the students and the city as an incubator to allow the
small businesses to develop and flourish. The Use The new use of the Idroscalo will act as a hub where people can share their
products and connect with businesses and fellow students. Through a network
of local businesses and experts the students and innovators will have access
to a broad range of information and advice in order to progress their ideas. The scheme spreads wider into the
city with temporary ʻpop upʼ
expos in the main square to connect with the public and give an insight into
the building function. When the small businesses take off they can make use
of disused buildings and areas in order to mass produce their products,
therefore not only reusing the building but in a wider context regenerating
the city. The Architecture The function of the buildings
responds to the needs of the city, however the orientation emphasizes the
existing idroscalo relating to the river and the
landscape. The architectural response facilitates the approach of the
incubator and is split across 2 spacious floors. In order to achieve this,
the existing roof is removed and a new box is inserted, retaining the
identity of the Idroscalo in the façades while
creating a beacon for the future use. The ground floor space is a pragmatic,
functional workspace with all the facilities needed to fabricate ideas,
collaborate and will be a hotbed of innovative thinking and problem solving.
A central stair acts as a machine to house all the core facilities, with the
contrasting flexible workspace revolving around it. The first floor is about
sharing the fabricated ideas, containing supporting spaces including meeting
rooms, auditorium and cafe/ exhibition spaces. Ideas will be shared with
local businesses and financial backers before being shared with the city and
a wider audience. |

italiano L’INCUBATORE Il riuso di edifici moderni in disuso, studio dellʼesempo dellʼidroscalo di Pavia. La
Città Grazie ad un attenta analisi della città, Pavia si è subito contraddistinta per lʼimportanza del sistema educativo universitario. Nonostante ciò è apparsa la mancanza di collegamento tra istruzione e mondo del lavoro; questo costringe molti ragazzi a migrare verso le altre città del nord Italia. Osservando la presenza di rimanenze industriali a Pavia, si è pensato di riconvertire la città , ma in particolare lʼedificio in esame, grazie a creatività ed innovazione, creando una nuova base di lancio per imprese emergenti. Il concept di convertire il vecchio idroscalo in un incubatore di idee è stato sviluppato al fine di milgiorare la connessione tra studenti e industrie. Lʼincubatore sarà una struttura in stretta collaborazione con lʼ Università e il Comune di Pavia, utilizzando le idee provenienti dagli studenti e della città per creare e sviluppare nuovi prodotti e possibili aziende. L’Uso La nuova fruizione dellʼ Idroscalo funziona come un hub dove le persone possono condividere idee e progetti, ma soprattutto possono venire a contatto con le aziende interessate. Grazie ad un network di imprese locali ed esperti di settore gli studenti avranno la possibilità di sviluppare le loro idee. Il sistema si sviluppa nella città con esposizioni “pop up” nella piazza principale. Quando i progetti sviluppati prendono piede si apre la possibilità di riutilizzare aree più grande, al momento abbandonate. In questo modo non valorizziamo solo la nostra area ma andiamo a rigenerare tutta la città. L’Architettura La funzione dellʼedificio risponde ai bisogni della città, mentre lʼorientamento si relaziona con il fiume Ticino ed il paesaggio. La risposta architettonica facilita lʼapproccio con lʼincubatore, dividendo lo spazio in due livelli. Per raggiungere questo scopo il tetto è stato rimosso e una nuova scatola è stata inserita al suo posto, mantenedo lʼidentità dellʼidroscalo grazie alle facciate. Lo spazio del piano terra è funzionale, open space, fornito di tutte attrezzature necessarie allo sviluppo dei progetti. Uno spazio adatto alla collaborazione e alla produzione. La scala centrale, in forte contrasto con la flessibilità dello spazio al contorno, è il cuore dellʼedificio dove vengono ospitate tutte le attrezzature. Il
primo piano è invece dedicato allo sharing delle
idee, alla condivisione. Infatti qui troviamo spazi come le meeting rooms, lʼauditorium- per conferenze e presentazioni-
e uno spazio esposizioni integrato con il cafe. Le
idee verranno condivise in primo luogo con le aziende e i produttori locali
per poi essere esposte al pubblico.La posizione
