The two conferences have been organized in partial sequence to enable scholars, teachers, PhD students, students and people variably interested in research or in technical aspects connected with subtitles and subtitling or dubbing to attend presentations of both conferences.

Ten years after the international Conference “Cinema, Paradiso delle Lingue. I sottotitoli nell’apprendimento Linguistico” (Pavia 19-22 September 2001) co-financed by the European Commission, the University of Pavia  is  hosting  two conferences that show the progress and the development of  studies and practical applications on the languages of films, audiovisual translation and audiovisual materials as useful teaching/learning aids to improve foreign language acquisition.

In fact the main objective of the two conferences is to present the theoretical and practical results of two  research projects: one on the teaching/learning functions of subtitled films and audiovisual materials, the other on the language of original and dubbed film dialogues and their role in acquisitional contexts.

* The international conference “Subtitles and Language Learning” (13-14 September 2012) concludes an international research project shared by 10 Universities. Its aim is to gather academics and young researchers as well as school teachers who are aware of the importance of subtitled audiovisual materials to promote multilingualism.

* The international conference “The language of films: Dubbing, acquisition and methodology” (14-15 September 2012) presents the results of a project funded by Alma Mater Ticinensis, a foundation created by the University of Pavia together with the Banca del Monte di Lombardia in order to finance up-to-date and useful projects presented by scholars of the university departments. This project is shared by researchers of the University of Malta and the University of Loughborough (UK).

Procedure: Participants who register for the conference:
“The Languages of Films: Dubbing, acquisition and methodology” (14-15 September 2012) can also attend the conference “Subtitles and Language Learning” (13-14 September 2012) on Thursday 13 September 2012 and pay the one-day special registration fee of 40 Euro including coffee breaks and buffet lunch.

Conversely: Participants who register for the conference:
“Subtitles and Language Learning” (13-14 September 2011)  can also attend the conference “The Languages of Films: Dubbing, Acquisition and Methodology” (14-15 September 2012) on Saturday 15 September 2012 and pay a one-day registration fee of 40 Euro including coffee breaks and buffet lunch.

PARTICIPANTS WHO REGISTER FOR EITHER OF THE TWO CONFERENCES CAN ATTEND BOTH CONFERENCES ON FRIDAY 14 SEPTEMBER. EACH PARTICIPANT MUST ATTEND COFFEE BREAKS AND BUFFET LUNCHES ORGANIZED BY THE CONFERENCE FOR WHICH SHE/HE REGISTERED .

Registration procedure
Participants who wish to attend both conferences must fill in two different registration forms and must pay two separate fees:

If you decide to register for “Subtitles and Language Learning” (13-14 September 2012) and to attend the “Languages of films” on Saturday 15 September 2012 you have to:

1) register for the “Subtitles and Language Learning” conference;
2) register and pay 40 euro directly to the conference “The languages of films” ticking the appropriate box in the registration form.

Vice versa, if you decide to register for the “Languages of films” (14-15 September 2012) and to attend the “Subtitles and Language Learning” conference on 13 September 2012 you have to:

1) register for the “Languages of films”;
2) register and pay 40 euro directly to “Subtitles and Language Learning” ticking the appropriate box in the registration form.
