Master Programme in
Building Engineering and Architecture
The Master Programme in Building Engineering and Architecture is a new educational path that offers big opportunities to both Chinese and Italian students. It has begun in this academic year 2011/2012, with the arrival of fifteen chinese students from the Tongji University of Shanghai who are attending now their 4^year and the next year they will attend their 5^one in Shanghai with other fifteen italian students. The next academic year 2012/2013 new fifteen chinese students will be selected to begin the Master Programme; the selections are opened and more details will be provided as soon as possible.

The path that has brought to this successfull outcome is composed by different steps that in these years led to a greater awarness of the importance of this project. Since 1994 the University of Pavia, IUSS (Institute for Advanced Studies) and Tongji University of Shanghai have cooperated in "The International Design Seminar – Urban Culture and Landscape Renewal" in the fields of Building Engineering – Architecture and in "The Urban Planning".
In 2005 the Minister of Education, University and Research of the Republic of Italy and the Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China signed in Beijing an Agreement which established the creation of the Chinese-Italian Joint Campus; as a result the Rector of the University of Pavia, the Director of IUSS and the President of Tongji University of Shanghai signed the Declaration of Intent for developing joint initiatives in the area of Higher Education.
In 2009 the Italian Chinese Curriculum as part of the Master Programme in Building Engineering and Architecture has been activated.
The lessons are organised in Pavia, at the Faculty of Engineering. The scheduled didactic activity will included the participation in the Urban Design Seminar in Shanghai, hold in June 2010 and October 2010.
The Italian Chinese Curriculum is an innovative academic experience created amid the Master Programme Course in Building Engineering and Architecture, thank to the well-established collaboration between University of Pavia (Italy) and Tongji University of Shanghai (China).
The five-year Master Degree Course in Building Engineering and Architecture has been established in 1998, in order to match architectural and engineering skills, qualifying for both professions in all European countries.
The two-year long curriculum is set in Pavia , held by an academic team of both Italian teachers and visiting professors from China, and is conducted entirely in English.
On the basis of the Agreement between the two countries, the title awarded is recognized in all the UE countries and Republic of China.
The new class is composed by selected students:

Chinese graduate students, from Tongji University , in possession of the Xueshi title in architecture of the duration of five years;

Italian undergraduate students, from the University of Pavia, who have already attended three years of the ordinary course in Building Engineering and Architecture.
In the month of July 2010 the University of Pavia and the Tongji University of Shanghai signed an agreement to activate from the academic year 2011/2012 the possibility to adivate a programme of Double Degree between the Master degree in Building Engineering and Architecture "Corso di laurea magistrale a ciclo unico in Ingegneria Edile-Architettura (Classe LM-4 cu.) in English language and the "Master of Architecture" (Shuoshi) of Tongji University, adopted the 21th of February 2011 from the University of Pavia;
- the Faculty of Engineering of University of Pavia has professors and skills necessary to conduct didactic activities in English language;
- the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University has professors and skills necessary to conduct didactic activities in English language.
